About the play

With a lush musical score, catchy songs and an ‘everyman’ story that relates to everyone’s experiences of making career and life decisions, Allegro is fun to perform and enjoyable to watch. Focusing on one man's life, from birth in 1905 until his thirty-fifth year, Allegro portrays life and love against the backdrop of the Depression.

Joe Taylor Jr. follows his father into medicine and is headed for great success in the big city. But the heart and the head don’t always agree and sometimes a man’s brain is cleared by the sudden light of one word…

The InPlayers production of Allegro includes an ensemble cast, a small choir and a 30-piece orchestra, conducted by Peter de Leeuw.

As an ‘integrated’ musical that uses songs to progress the narrative, Allegro now fits the standard model for musicals, but was ahead of its time when it was new. Never a Broadway success, the show has rarely been produced. As far as we know, Allegro has never been performed in the Netherlands in the 70 years since it was first produced.

"Allegro is perfection. A stunning blending of beauty, integrity, intelligence, imagination, taste and skill ... it lends new stature to the American musical stage." Robert Coleman, the New York Daily Mirror, October 1947
"Distinguished and tumultuous. It takes its place alongside of Oklahoma! and Carousel as a theatrical piece of taste, imagination, and showmanship.” Ward Morehouse, The Sun, October 1947
