Direct a Play
Your Ideas Are Welcome
The InPlayers plan to produce three full-length productions each season in addition to our many other events.
We welcome ideas for productions and shows! We are always actively looking for new directors who would like to work with us. Please contact the committee to inform us about your ideas. Once we have discussed it with you and if we decide to move forward together, we will be on hand to support you in auditions, selecting a production crew and everything else that will be necessary to get the show on the road!
This is a great opportunity for you to fulfil your directing dreams in a safe, supported way knowing that cast, crew, rehearsals, theatre and ticket sales are taken care of, if that’s what you need. The InPlayers is about letting anyone and everyone get involved in English-language amateur dramatics. We aim to keep our activities friendly, fun and relaxed, but of course as high-quality as we can make them.
If you have an idea for a production,
You can download a Production Submission form here:
Guidelines to putting on a production
Pre-submission requirements
You need to direct the production yourself, or nominate someone who will direct for you. The InPlayers Committee cannot find a director for you. Please include the Director’s name on the submission document.
Each production needs an initial production team of (at least) a Director and a Production Manager (and/or Stage Manager). In case of producing a musical, it also needs a Musical Director. If you are having difficulty finding crew members, the InPlayers Committee may be able to help with this. Please get in touch with us and let us know what you need.
The Committee will look at all submissions and get back to everyone who submits with feedback and our decision. You will be asked to present your idea to the committee.
Your production should ideally be performed on the dates that InPlayers has reserved for our winter, spring and summer productions. Currently we have reserved the following dates for performances in Amsterdam:
Season 2023-2024
14 - 17 March 2024 (taken)
27 - 30 June, 2024 (taken)
Season 2024-2025
24 - 27 October, 2024
23 - 26 January, 2025
Please communicate your preferences for performance dates and locations. A proposal for up to two years in advance will be considered.
Your production submission
You don’t need to have thought it all through to the last detail, but we would like you to have considered the following in your submission:
Cost of performance rights. These can be found on the internet.
People you already have committed to the production team.
Technicalities such as set, music, lights, props, audio-visual, and costumes required, particularly anything that will be complicated or very expensive. Please note; the InPlayers does not have a workshop for set building.
Any thoughts you have had on a budget.
Your cast
We like to involve as many of our members as possible in our productions, but productions with smaller casts are also welcome. Prospective members are of course also welcome to audition and join. All those cast in a production must become a member.
Your crew
We have many people associated with us who have expertise in costumes, music, piano playing, lights, sound and set design, so we can help in these areas, although we encourage directors to connect with potential crew members.
Your auditions
We will help you arrange auditions and book the location. We will promote the auditions on our website, in our newsletter and on social media. We require that you hold open auditions. We are also open to helping with producing pre-cast plays, but these won’t be considered for one of our three main productions. If the committee decides to facilitate a pre-cast show, it will be presented separately. This is because we believe our mission is to get people of all levels involved in amateur dramatics and we therefore want everyone to have a chance at auditioning for our main productions.
Your rehearsals
We will help you book rehearsals spaces in Amsterdam. For most productions we recommend you to schedule two rehearsals a week.
Your budget
Of course we would like to set all costs off against ticket sales and we are continuously working on improving our publicity. However it doesn’t always work out as planned and we have some room to fund performances from membership fees. At the end of the day, we are all about putting on plays, not about making a profit. Our goal is to break even.
Your publicity and ticket sales
We will help with publicity and, of course, ticket sales, but we expect the director to get involved in publicising the performance. Ticket sales are made online, as well as at the door of the theatre.
Your contact with the committee
If your submission is selected, you will be assigned a committee member as your liaison with the committee. They will help with as much as you feel necessary - particularly budgeting - but ultimately planning and production will be up to you and your production team members.
