Auditions for Virtual Reality

  • CREA Amsterdam 170 Nieuwe Achtergracht Amsterdam, NH, 1018 WV Netherlands (map)

The InPlayers Amsterdam are seeking two male actors for our upcoming production of "Virtual Reality" a play by Alan Arkin. This will be our entry for FEATS 2015.

Cast: two male actors, aged anywhere between 18 and 90. Performances will be 15 & 16 May in Amsterdam (tbc) and one performance between 22-25 May (Pinkster/Whitsun) weekend) at FEATS in Hamburg. Rehearsals from mid-March to end May, dates, times and location tbd.

Things you need to know: for legal and insurance purposes, you need to be[come] a member of the InPlayers if you are cast. InPlayers cannot cover the cost of your travel to and accommodation in Hamburg, much as we'd like to. Depending on our performance slot, we may need to travel 21 May evening or 23 May early morning, so your availability on those days is also important.

Yes, but what about the play? What's it about?
"Two men waiting for equipment to do an unspecified job. The one in charge insists on doing a dry run inventory of the contents of the expected crates. The purely hypothetical assumes a wacky, sinister autonomy that transports them to a frozen wilderness. They grow close; they grow apart; they become mortal enemies.

A gem of nuanced interaction, one of those deftly constructed two-handed exercises built on back-and-forth shifts of mood. A deeply funny, finely graded psychological portrait that also becomes a tribute to the conjuring powers of theater. Imagine the testy, silly one-upmanship of Abbott and Costello crossed with the menacing ambiguity of Harold Pinter and you'll get the idea." Full script available on request.

For the audition:
I'll send you two short excerpts from the play. You need to prepare both sides of both dialogues; you'll get to perform both characters at the audition, so show a clear distinction between the two. It's a group audition so you'll work with each other. Your own interpretations are, obviously, welcome.

What I'm looking for in the audition (other than fabulous acting, of course):
- Chemistry between the characters - tension. Train-wreck of a personality clash.
- Precision with movement, especially miming with imaginary objects.
- Ability to switch mood, power, status, both with voice and body.
