On Saturday, April 12, from 13:00, we will get together to read Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry.
Ubu Roi is a wild, bizarre, and comic play that outraged 19th century audiences, but has since been adapted and translated innumerable times. Join in our read of this revolutionary play which overturned cultural conventions of the time and opened the way for Surrealism and Absurdist fiction.
Although the play was originally a teenage boy’s scurrilous attack on an unloved teacher, it is as relevant as ever today. Pere Ubu is a grotesque, crude, cowardly glutton with no redeeming features. Somehow this monstrous boastful dictator has become king and everyone has to beware!
Location: Room 2.03 at CREA, 170 Nieuwe Achtergracht, Amsterdam.
The play reading will be hosted by Jeremy.
