About the class
In amateur theatre, the stage manager often does a bit of everything. Where do you start, what do you need to keep track of, and how can you make sure every job doesn’t become your job?
Alongside the practical organisation of a production, stage managers play a vital role in communication, creating a safe and respectful working environment, and making sure everyone understands their responsibilities and knows where to raise concerns.
This friendly, practical four-hour InPlayers workshop will introduce you to the essentials of stage management, from organising auditions and preparing for rehearsals to recording blocking, managing props, creating a prompt book and getting ready for performances.
We’ll explore the practical challenges of stage management, including working with volunteers, making the most of limited backstage space, communicating clearly across a production team and handling the unexpected. We’ll also look at basic safety, risk awareness and supporting a positive, inclusive environment for everyone involved. There’ll be plenty of time for questions, discussion and sharing experiences.
No previous experience is needed. Whether you’re completely new to stage management, preparing to take on the role for the first time or simply want to clarify your understanding, you’ll be very welcome.
