Singing a song in the context of a musical or cabaret performance is very different than delivering a pop tune at your local karaoke. To understand the meaning and subtext, and how they blend with the musicality of the score is the most useful tool you can have to make a song your own or to bring fully fleshed life to a character. A vocal coach can teach you phrasing, where to breathe, when to get softer or louder and how to hit that problematic high note, but they rarely explore WHAT you are singing about.
This ongoing workshop will teach you how to apply simple techniques to bring the lyrics of a song to same level of importance as the music. All that is required for this workshop is the ability to carry a tune and be able to feel it emotionally.
WHEN: The workshop will take place once every two weeks on Tuesday evenings; 19 September – 12 December 2017. (October 3 & 17, November 14 & 28, December 12 & 19) There is no requirement to attend every class. Each person works at all times on their own individual level and can continue working on a piece whenever they can attend.
TIME: 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
WHERE: Muziek- en Dansschool Amstelveen, Stadsplein 99, Amstelveen (easily reachable by bus and metro, parking garage available) – room 8 on the third floor
COST: € 5 per session for members (Can be paid per class in case you can't make them all) € 15 per session for non-members, first lesson is free if you join the InPlayers after the lesson. Can be paid in cash or pin at the beginning of the lesson.
WHAT YOU NEED: For the first class, you need to bring a song (with sheet music in a key you can sing in). You must memorize the song as a MONOLOGUE FIRST (written out separately). When you have convincingly performed the monologue, you will then be given an opportunity to sing it, but not before. By the second class we will provide a pianist for anyone whose monologue is ready to be sung.
INSTRUCTOR GEORGE HANSEL: has been working in the theatre for over 40 years in one capacity or another. He has taught creative dramatics and acting to all ages throughout his career and has coached actors into being accepted by almost every university acting program in the U.S.A.
PLEASE NOTE: It is part of the instructor's job to coach you into speaking a convincing monologue. If you cannot properly perform the monologue, you won't get the chance to sing.
